UAPB Lady Lions Capture A Historic Win Over Defending SWAC Champions

ITTA BENA, Miss.-The Lady Lions came out to play Friday night looking to prove move into the upper echelon of teams within the Southwestern Athletic Conference. It only took the girls 45 minutes to do so as they scored all 4 goals in the first half against the defending conference champions Mississippi Valley State. Despite playing the day before, the Lady Lions came out with high energy to put the game away in the first half.

Jade West led the Lady Lions with two goals and one assist; and Nicole Parks-Powell and Shantel Brown contributed on the scoring with 1 goal a piece. This was the first time in school history that the Lady Lions have prevailed over the highly competitive MVSU soccer program.

“Its always a great feeling beating the defending champions of last year, but now we are past that and our focus is on playing Alcorn on Sunday,” said Head Coach Mazza.

The Lady Lions were up to a tough task this week with playing 4 games in six days.

“Its not easy playing so many games in that many days,” Mazza said. “It was important how we managed the team this week to keep them from any injuries and most importantly making sure every player was focused on playing one game at a time”.

This was the first time this year that the Lady Lions went into half time up 4 goals. “I thought we played exceptional in the first half,” Mazza said.

UAPB was nearly perfect with having six shots on goal with four ending up in the back on the net. MVSU was not able to break down UAPB defense in the game as Chelsea Klein picked up her seventh shutout of the season and fourth in a row.

The Lady Lions will be in action Sunday afternoon against the Alcorn State Braves at 1pm.
