BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- The Southwestern Athletic Conference announced its 2009-10 Men's and Women's Basketball Preseason All-Conference honors Monday. Honors were voted on by the league's coaches, sports information departments and selected members of the media.
On the women's side selected to the first team was Prairie View A&M forward Gaati Werema, Alabama A&M guard Katrich Williams, Prairie View A&M guard Candice Thomas, Southern forward Freda Allen, and Alabama State center Shanice Merritt.
Named second-team preseason All-SWAC were guards Dominique Smith (Prairie View A&M) and LaQuisha Slaton (Arkansas-Pine Bluff), forwards Tanika Jackson (Alabama State) and Dominisha Johnson (Alabama A&M) and center Shay Holmes (Arkansas-Pine Bluff).
The Lady Lions were picked to finish fourth overall marking their highest preseason selection in school history. Arkansas-Pine Bluff will begin their season on Friday, Nov. 13th on the road at Mississippi State.
On the men's side UAPB's Terrence Calvin was named to the Southwestern Athletic Conference Preseason All-SWAC First Team after posting impressive numbers last season during his junior campaign last season.
Joining Calvin on the team is fellow teammate Lebaron Weathers who was selected as a member of the All-SWAC Second Team.
Overall the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions were picked to finish third behind Jackson State and Prairie View A&M. The men's team will kick-off their season on Friday, Nov 13th on the road versus Colorado
