UAPB prevailed 6-5 in game one of the series as the Golden Lions capitalized off of timely hitting as well some impressive defense down the stretch. For the game Arkansas-Pine Bluff tallied 12 hits highlighted by a four run 1st inning. Lloyd Burchett came up big for UAPB as he went 3-for-3 knocking in three RBI’s. Justin Moring picked up the victory as he pitched five and a third innings facing a total of 29 GSU batters.
Game two was a highly contested affair that subsequently went down to the wire. Trey Austin paced the Golden Lions offensive attack tallying two RBI’s off of two hits in two at bats. Leading 5-4 in the top of the seventh inning Arkansas-Pine Bluff was able to secure the games final out after outfielder Jeremy Davis threw a strike to home plate allowing UAPB catcher Barry McDonley a chance to tag out Grambling State’s runner.
In the final contest of the series the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions jumped out to an 8-4 advantage after three innings of play as UAPB was able to put up three runs in the third. Grambling State slowly began to chip away at the Golden Lions lead tallying one run in the sixth before erupting for a 10 run seventh inning.
The Tigers pulled ahead of UAPB 17-11 and never looked back from there. Both teams added runs in the ninth but the Golden Lions were unable to mount a sufficient comeback as the Tigers held on for a 18-12 victory avoiding a three-game sweep. Grambling State’s Adrian Turner was credited with the win while UAPB’s William Newton was given the loss.
