UAPB Track teams compete well at SWAC Indoor Championships
PINE BLUFF, Ark- The University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff men’s and women’s track teams competed in the 2009 Southwestern Athletic Conference Indoor track and field Championships this past weekend. Both teams finished the meet in fifth place.
The men’s team returned to competition for the first time since 2004. Danny Evans led the way for the Golden Lions as he finished in first place in the men’s 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.07.
On the women’s side the 800 meter run was claimed by Ester Adeyemi of Arkansas Pine Bluff with a time of 2:21.26. The Lady Lions Jackline Chumo was named the Women's Outstanding Track Performer after stellar finishes in the events she competed in. In the longest running event of the meet, it was Chumo that endured the 5000 meter run for the first place finish and a SWAC conference record with a time of 18:34.57.
“We expected Jackline and Danny to compete well at the meet,” said head men’s and women’s track and field coach Curtis Pittman. “Overall our men’s and women’s track teams have continued to improve over the course of this season.”
The men’s and women’s track and field teams will now set their attention towards Outdoor competition. After productive starts in Indoor competition both teams should be geared for a strong run to close the season.
