PINE BLUFF, Ark.- A two run walk-off homerun by first basemen Matt Pace lifted the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions (7-4, 3-3 SWAC) to a dramatic come from behind victory over the Prairie View A&M Panthers (8-5, 2-4 SWAC).
Trailing 13-5 going into the bottom half of the seventh inning the UAPB Golden Lions mounted a furious comeback scoring an astounding seven runs in the seventh. Arkansas-Pine Bluff was able to capitalize off of several PVAMU Panther miscues as well a solid display of hitting during the inning.
Both teams went scoreless in the eight inning of play and the Golden Lions were able to retire the Panthers side in the ninth without allowing any additional runs to reach home plate.
Still behind one run by the score of 13-12 in the bottom of the ninth, UAPB’s Rashad Billingsley was hit by the Panthers closer Benjamin Blackburn with no runners on base and two outs.
With the count at one ball, two strikes and two outs UAPB’s Pace unloaded with a monster shot to deep left field subsequently sealing the game for the Golden Lions at a 14-13 margin.
With the victory UAPB captured the series against the Panthers winning a total of two out of three games. The Golden Lions won the first game of the three-game series 2-0 and dropped the second game 7-5.
The Golden Lions will return to the diamond in mid week action on Mar. 11 as they will travel to Little Rock to face the Trojans of Arkansas-Little Rock.
