ALEXANDRIA, La.-The Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions Tennis team fell to the Alcorn State Braves 4-1 in the Championship match of the 2009 Southwestern Athletic Conference Men’s Tennis Tournament.
ASU jumped to an early lead in the finals as they earned the doubles point in pairings one and three. UAPB’s Hugo Gomez won in three sets at the #1 singles slot to put the match at 2-1. The Braves subsequently won the next three matches at the two, three, and four singles position to win the match 4-1.
The lost in the finals brings a bittersweet end to what was an amazing run for a very young and talented Arkansas-Pine Bluff team. With the return of all of their players next season the Golden Lions will look to make yet another push towards a SWAC Championship Title.
