UAPB Soccer Holds First Week of Pre-season Training
PINE BLUFF, The University of Arkansas Pine Bluff soccer team began preparation for the 2010 season this past Monday with an early morning training session at 7:00 a.m. and continued with an afternoon practice at 3 p.m.
The Lady Lions welcomed 21 players to the 2010 season. They return 11 players from last season, which posted a 12-7-4 overall record and a 3-0-1 Western Division record – good for a second place finish. UAPB saved its best performances for the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament, earning its first league tournament title with wins over Alabama A&M, Jackson State, and Prairie View A&M. UAPB advanced to the NCAA College Cup for the first time in school history.
UAPB welcomes 10 newcomers, which include eight freshmen and two transfers. Mazza is hoping to break-in the 10 newcomers in time for the start of the 2010 season, with a home opener against Arkansas State on Aug. 27 at 5:00p.m
"You could tell from our fitness that our veterans performed very well in the off-season strength and conditioning program. But I was also very impressed with the fitness of our freshman class. I don't think we've ever had a freshman class show up for camp at this level of fitness," said Mazza.
The Lady Lions also have the Offensive and Defensive preseason picks, Jade West and Erika Forbes. “I am proud of my achievement, but it is a reflection of the team. We all understand that we need to work harder then last year to achieve the same success,” said Forbes. Jade West has been very happy with her teammate's work ethic. “I am very impressed with the talent coach has brought in this year, but I am most impressed with are work rate. Every practice has been intense, and it feels like we are in a game every day. I am very excited to start the season,” said West.
