NORMAN, Okla.- The Golden Lions baseball team continued to make strides today as a program as they lost a hard fought 5-4 decision to the #16 Oklahoma Sooners.
UAPB turned in another solid showing in game one of the two-game series losing 9-4. The Golden Lions have shown a lot of potential as they get set to get deep into conference play.
“Our guys are starting to buy into our system,” said UAPB head baseball coach
Carlos James. “We are trying to build a program here and all of our players are starting to believe in putting the team and our collective goals at the fore front of everything they do. When you reach a point where you have everyone striving towards one common goal the potential is limitless.”
The Sooners jumped out to a 4-1 advantage after four innings of play. Arkansas-Pine Bluff rallied closing the gap to a one-run lead in the eighth inning after scoring two runs.
Oklahoma did just enough to stave off a UAPB comeback as they held the Golden Lions scoreless in the games' final frame.
Newton started the game pitching three innings for UAPB allowing just one earned run. Tyler Hill drove in two earned RBI's while also scoring a run.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff will return home this weekend with a three-game series scheduled against South Dakota State. Game one is set for Friday at 12:00 p.m.
